Polycarp I

After 3 years where the bishopric of Byzantium had no Bishop, in 71 A.D. Polycarp was elected as the successor of Onesimus. He remained shepherd for 18 years until his death in 89 A.D. His relics were buried in the temple of Argyroupolis, as were those of his predecessors.

During the last eight years of his bishopric (81 A.D. onwards) there was the large persecution of Christians by the emperor Dometianus.
