Jeremias I

He was from Zitsa of Epirus. He had a limited education, but was excellent in his management skills. Prior to his election to the throne, he served as metropolitan of Sofia; after his election, he paid an important visit to Cyprus, Egypt, Sinai, and Palestine.

During his absence, Joannicios of Sozopolis was uncanonically made into Patriarch. Jeremias and the rest Patriarchs of the East synodically excomunicated him as a misholder of the throne. When he returned to Constantinople, he was accepted enthusiastically by the people; he shepherded the flock with great kindness and responsibility. He died during his trip to Vlachia in 1546.
